Integration Strategy 2010-2015

The PPCII Immigrant Integration Strategy outlines the goals and objectives that must be met in order to make Peterborough a more welcoming community for newcomers to work, live and study.

To meet the objectives of the Integration Strategy over the next five years, the PPCII has developed an Interactive Action Plan.  This Action Plan allows you to find out what activities are already underway in the community as well as how you can get involved in helping to implement the objectives of the Immigrant Integration Strategy.

History of the Integration Strategy

The Integration Strategy is a "living document", and is a result of community consultations and research projects that took place over two phases.

The first phase of research improved our understanding of issues faced in the settlement and integration of immigrants in the Peterborough community. The research projects in this first phase include

  • A review of peer-reviewed and grey literature regarding how the issue of immigrant integration has been examined in second and third-tier Canadian communities (findings from 1995 and on)
  • Focus groups with key community representatives to uncover the barriers that immigrants face in engaging in the five priority areas of health and social services, employment, education, housing and transportation. Similarly, the emphasis is on issues faced by second- and third-tier municipalities. Input was also sought from immigrants (both new and long-term) to Peterborough.

The second phase of research looked at other cities comparable to Peterborough. With this research, and the information from the first phase of the process, the PPCII was able to create the Integration Strategy.Below are the documents from the second phase of the research:

Today, the objectives of the Integration strategy will be met by carrying out a series of proposed actions identified through the research and community consultation process.Community participation is essential to implementing these proposed actions. If you, or your organization, is interested in getting involved with the Integration Strategy, you can do so through joining a committee, becoming a member of the council, partnering with the PPCII to complete a project, or joining one of the Sector Working Groups. If you are interested in participating in a sector working group, please contact the Chair of the Integration Strategy Committee, Debbie Harrison.
